Microsoft Update for Microsoft Partners

Welcome to our news!

August's Partner Center updates point to one date: October 1. Promotions retire, software pricing shifts, and growth margins go live that day. A SKU rename and a new home for compliance training round out the month.

TL;DR:

  • Microsoft 365 E7 promotions retire October 1: close eligible E7 promo deals by September 30. E3 promotions run through December 31.
  • A 5% uplift hits annual-term CSP software billed monthly from October 1, at renewal for existing subscriptions: tell affected customers now.
  • Growth margin discovery and eligibility APIs are live in production ahead of the October 1 launch: test your integration and reconciliation.
  • Windows 365 Frontline is now Windows 365 Flex as of September 3: update scripts, reports, and docs that use the old name.
  • Compliance training moved to the Partner Skilling hub: point your customer-facing teams there.

Here are the announcements that matter most for CSP partners this month.

Microsoft 365 promotion updates

What's happening

Microsoft 365 E7 promotional offers retire on October 1, 2026, as Microsoft shifts partner investment toward growth margins. Two Microsoft 365 E3 promotions stay available through December 31, 2026: 10% off the 3-year term (new-to-offer) and 20% off the 1-year term (targeted offer).

Date of Announcement: August 3, 2026

Effective Date: Eligible E7 promotional purchases close September 30, 2026. New E7 promotional transactions aren't available from October 1, 2026. E3 promotions run through December 31, 2026.

Who is affected: CSP distributors, indirect resellers, direct bill partners, and scale solution providers (SSPs)

Action Required: Yes. Prioritize open E7 opportunities and close qualifying promotional transactions by September 30. Subscriptions bought before the retirement continue on their contracted terms.

💡 Quick Note

Days, not weeks, are left on E7 promo pricing. Don't let a deal slip to October 1 on a paperwork delay. After purchase, check the `PromotionID` and `EffectiveUnitPrice` fields in the estimates file or reconciliation data to confirm the discount applied. Details are in New commerce promotions

CSP software pricing update: 5% uplift on monthly billing

What's happening

Microsoft applies a 5% cost of capital uplift to CSP software subscriptions with annual-term commitments billed monthly. This covers products such as SQL Server, Windows Server, Client Access Licenses, and System Center. Annual billing and month-to-month subscriptions don't change.

Date of Announcement: August 12, 2026 (corrected announcement: an earlier communication had the wrong effective date)

Effective Date: October 1, 2026. For existing annual-term software subscriptions billed monthly, the uplift applies at renewal on or after October 1, 2026.

Who is affected: All CSP partners transacting annual-term software subscriptions with monthly billing plans

Action Required: Yes. No system or Partner Center changes are required, but Microsoft asks partners to communicate the change in advance to customers with renewals on or after October 1, 2026.

💡 Quick Note: Pull every software subscription on monthly billing with a renewal from October 1 onward, and contact those customers before the renewal notice does it for you. Annual billing isn't affected, so the uplift opens a fair conversation about switching billing plans at renewal. If you saw the first communication, disregard its date: October 1 is the correct one. Check the monthly software price list to validate the new pricing.

Growth margins and API readiness updates

What's happening

Microsoft published readiness resources and technical guidance for growth margins, which give eligible partners incremental margin on qualifying Microsoft 365 growth opportunities. The growth margin discovery and eligibility APIs and the Growth Margins offers experience in the Pricing workspace are already available in production.

Date of Announcement: August 25, 2026

Effective Date: Growth margins launch October 1, 2026. Discovery and eligibility APIs are available in production now; other capabilities remain in Sandbox until launch.

Who is affected: CSP distributors and direct bill partners (growth margins don't apply to indirect resellers)

Action Required: Yes, for partners with Partner Center API integrations. Review the readiness resources and validate API changes for data export and billing automation before October 1. Eligible partners can open an Advisory Case with Microsoft Partner Technical Consulting for API transition guidance.

💡 Quick Note: The piece most teams will miss is reconciliation, not the quote. The `PriceBenefits` reconciliation attribute is already available in Sandbox and production, so map it in your billing pipeline now instead of discovering it on the first October invoice. Use the eligibility API to check a deal before purchase rather than after. Full technical details are in Growth margins.

Windows 365 Frontline renamed to Windows 365 Flex

What's happening

All Windows 365 Frontline SKUs are renamed Windows 365 Flex. This is a branding change only: functionality, licensing, user entitlements, provisioning, existing Cloud PCs, and billing stay the same.

Date of Announcement: August 4, 2026

Effective Date: September 3, 2026. SKUs remained available under the Frontline name through September 2, 2026.

Who is affected: All partners with Windows 365 Frontline customers

Action Required: Yes, for internal references only. Update documentation, reports, automation, scripts, ticketing workflows, and procedures that reference the Windows 365 Frontline service plan name. Validate custom reporting and inventory processes after the rollout.

💡 Quick Note: Renames break automation quietly. Any script or reconciliation rule that matches on "Frontline" in a service plan name may stop matching once the new name shows up in a tenant. During the transition, match on both names: Microsoft notes the Intune admin center may still show Frontline in some places. See Managing Windows 365 Flex Cloud PCs.

Compliance training moves to the Partner Skilling hub

What's happening

The Microsoft Partner Compliance Readiness training gallery now lives in the Partner Skilling hub, which replaces both Partner University and the previous Partner Compliance gallery. The catalog includes on-demand modules such as customer purchase commitment, additional resellers, discount passthrough and transparency, and deal execution compliance.

Date of Announcement: August 26, 2026

Effective Date: Available now

Who is affected: All partners

Action Required: No mandatory action. Microsoft encourages partners to use the Partner Skilling hub as the primary source for compliance training and to share it with customer-facing employees.

💡 Quick Note

Update any internal links still pointing to Partner University. Give this to your Compliance admin: that role exists in Partner Center to coordinate and complete required compliance training. Direct bill partners also have a reason to track completion, since compliance training evidence is one of the examples Microsoft lists for the compliance function in the Direct Bill authorization process. Role details are in Compliance admin role in Partner Center, and authorization criteria in Direct Bill partner onboarding.

The Bottom Line

August is a countdown to October 1. E7 promotions end, monthly-billed software gets more expensive, and growth margins go live that same day. Microsoft is moving partner economics away from limited-time discounts and toward structural margin and consistent pricing. Partners who finish their pipeline, customer, and billing-system work before October get the upside of all three changes, without the cleanup.
